A Bridal Portrait in the Kitchen

a Toronto bride photographed at home before her wedding.

A bridal portrait photographed in the bride's own kitchen — which is, I think, what makes it work. The best wedding portraits aren't really about where you are; they're about the light you find when you get there. A west-facing kitchen window in the late afternoon can outperform any studio setup, and an unposed moment at home will almost always feel more like the person than a staged frame on a manicured lawn.

When I work a wedding day, I'm watching for these spots — the corner of a room with beautiful soft light, the staircase landing, the quiet space between scheduled events. The traditional portraits still get made; they're part of what most clients ask for. But the photographs that tend to mean the most, years later, are usually the ones taken in the unscheduled minutes.
