The Bride's Parents at the Recessional

A moment in the Sky Room at The Carlu after the ceremony

The bride's parents recessing from the ceremony, both of them beaming, in the Sky Room at The Carlu. Most wedding recessionals are photographed centred on the couple, and rightly so, but the bride's parents have a recessional of their own a few moments later, and it carries something distinct. They are not just witnesses to the marriage. They have raised one half of it, and what shows on their faces in this moment is the entire arc of getting here.

A wedding is the creation of a new family, but it is also the meeting of two existing families, and the photographs that record both registers are often the ones the family returns to most over the years. This is part of why so many of the families I now photograph in Forest Hill, Rosedale, Lawrence Park, and Leaside come to me specifically for multi-generation portraits. The same attention that catches the parents in this frame is the attention I bring to a family session.
